The Baba Yaga has returned, and this time on console. Strategic action game John Wick Hex is coming to the PlayStation 4 in May.
Developed by Bithell Games, the creators of Thomas Was Alone and Subsurface Circular, John Wick Hex puts you in control of Wick as he takes on a new foe. This is a prequel story, so you do not need to have seen the movies to know what is going on.
The game does have some talent from the movie franchise, including Ian McShane and Lance Reddick reprise their characters. Prolific video game voice actor Troy Baker voices the elusive villain Hex.
The PlayStation port is being done in collaboration with Ant Workshop. The Edinburgh-based studio has worked with Bithell Games in the past, porting the two Circular games to Nintendo Switch.
Instead of playing in real-time, the game uses a timeline system to move through environments and fight enemies. Each move requires a certain amount of time to complete, whether that is taking a shot at an enemy or rolling away from fire.
Even the simple act of reloading your gun requires strategic thinking, so plan wisely. The game is quite difficult and does not provide many of the handholds newer strategy games do.
John Wick Hex Controls Redesigned for DualShock 4
The PlayStation 4 version has a redesigned control system, which gives you access to each of Wick’s skills. Along with that, the game comes with Trophies for completing different challenges.
Those looking to John Wick Hex as a continuation of the broader world of the assassin universe may find the game lacking. However, as a new spin on the strategy genre, it is worth checking out.
John Wick Hex will be available on the PlayStation 4 on May 5. It will cost $19.99 at launch.
