Disney is reportedly working on a remake of their 1973 adaptation of Robin Hood. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the remake will be a combination of live-action and CGI. The studio is targeting a release on its streaming platform, Disney+. Although there is no cast attached as of yet, there are more than a few impressive creatives.

Carlos Lopez Estrada will direct. He’s best known for directing 2018’s Blindspotting, a critically adored crime drama. He also helmed an episode of FX’s Legion and recently wrapped the drama Summertime, which debuted at Sundance earlier this year. Kari Granlund, who wrote last year’s Disney+ remake of Lady and the Tramp, will handle the script. She also recently finished writing Godmothered, another upcoming Disney+ feature about an inexperienced fairy godmother. Justin Springer, producer of last year’s Dumbo remake and Tron Legacy, will produce. THR states they each signed on before Hollywood’s current lockdown. But the project is now in early development.

Robin Hood by Disney

Disney’s Robin Hood follows the classic tale of the hero who steals from the rich to give to the needy. But all characters are anthropomorphic animals. Although it’s unclear, Disney’s choice to remake the movie as a live-action/CGI hybrid suggests it will look similar to The Lion King and The Jungle Book. This remake will also be a musical, which is a bit different from the original. While it did feature a couple of songs such as the popular “Oo De Lally,” it couldn’t be classified as a musical in the traditional sense.

Robin Hood marks another addition to the long line of upcoming Disney remakes, sequels, and other connected content for its streaming platform. A remake of Lilo & Stitch is also in development for Disney+, as is a sequel to Hocus Pocus. There’s also a prequel series for Beauty and the Beast in development and a whole host of shows for Marvel and Star Wars properties.
