Venom 2 has been delayed for eight months. This comes from Variety who reports that the Sony film will now release on June 25th, 2021 instead of its original October 2nd, 2020 date. Along with that, the sequel has a new official title. Are you sitting down?
Venom 2 will officially be called Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage follows suit of the many movies that have hit delays over the past few months from The Batman to James Bond: No Time To Die. Sony is also familiar with delays as even their films such as Morbius and Uncharted have been pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Following Venom’s Success in 2018
The first Venom had a stunning and sensational run at the box office, earning nearly a billion dollars worldwide. If Venom: Let There Be Carnage can emulate that success, Sony would definitely be pleased. However, the studio probably wants to improve the franchise’s reception with the sequel. Despite it being a huge hit for Sony, the first film was polarizing amongst critics and the general audience. Some loved the 90s movie-esque tone and praised it for being a fun action flick. On the other hand, critics of the film bashed the writing and poor pacing. As for what we thought at The Nerd Stash, well, it’s a bit complicated. Here’s a snippet from our review:
“Leaving the theater, I had mixed feelings about Venom. I so desperately wanted myself to find the silver linings of the film (which there are some), but I found there was too much bad in there than good. I do truly believe all is not lost and a potential sequel and subsequent universe can be salvaged from this hodge-podge of a film.”
Maybe adding Andy Serkis as the sequel’s new director and putting Carnage as the main antagonist will be just what this franchise needs. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until June 2021 to find out.
