Suzanne Collins, the author of The Hunger Games series, delighted fans last year when she announced that she would be delving back into the world of her much-beloved series. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is a prequel novel that focuses on an 18-year old Coriolanus Snow. Before the book has even been released, Lionsgate announced Tuesday that a prequel film is already in development.

The synopsis is as follows:

The film will focus on Coriolanus Snow at age 18, years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem. Young Coriolanus is handsome and charming, and though the Snow family has fallen on hard times, he sees a chance for a change in his fortunes when he is chosen to be a mentor for the Tenth Hunger Games… only to have his elation dashed when he is assigned to mentor the girl tribute from impoverished District 12.

Francis Lawrence, the director behind Catching Fire, Mockingjay Part 1, and Mockingjay Part 2, will return to direct The Hunger Games prequel film. Suzanne Collins will be heavily involved in the process, but Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine, Catching Fire) will adapt The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes for the big-screen. Producer Nina Jacobson will also be returning to work on the project.

As of this writing, a release window for the prequel film has not been announced. However, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes novel is set to release physically, digitally and in audiobook format on May 19th, 2020. Pre-orders are available now on Amazon and other retailers.
