HBO released the first look for new drama series Lovecraft Country, and it seems kind of terrifying!
The channel has finally dropped the teaser for the long-awaited series Lovecraft Country about 1950s Jim Crow America – it will debut later this year.
Based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Matt Ruff, the series will follow Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he embarks on a journey with friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance), in search of his missing father, played by Michael Kenneth Williams.
Setting off a road trip with a goal of finding Freeman’s father, the trio struggle to survive and overcome not only the racism of 1950’s America but find themselves facing some unexpected horrifying along the way.
Lovecraft Country looks to offer plenty of southern gothic thrills and chills sticking to the original source – the novel from Ruff, who is known for stories as The Call of Cthulhu and The Colour Out of Space.
The original dark fantasy novel explored the connection between the horror fiction of H.P. Lovecraft, and racism in the USA circa the Jim Crow era, and the first look of Lovecraft Country, which is set to stream on HBO Max this August, perfectly captures the thrilling horror tones of the novel.
The trailer expertly shifts in tone from cheerful to eerie in just one minute and 24 seconds and is sure to hook viewers.
Executive produced by Misha Green (who is also showrunner), J.J. Abrams, Jordan Peele, Bill Carraro, Yann Demange (who directed Episode 1), Daniel Sackheim (who directed Episodes 2 and 3) and David Knoller (executive producer on Episode 1), Lovecraft Country is produced by Afemme, Inc., Bad Robot Productions and Monkeypaw Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.
