Netflix just dropped a trailer for its upcoming action blockbuster The Old Guard starring Charlize Theron. It’s an adaptation of the Image comic by writer Greg Rucka (Wonder Woman) and artist Leonardo Fernandez (Deadpool, Punisher: MAX). The comic first launched in 2017 and follows a group of immortal soldiers for hire. But in the 21st century, they must fight against a group that wants to discover the source of their immortality and use it for themselves. Check out the trailer below:
The Netflix movie looks to follow the same base premise of the comic. Charlize Theron plays Andy, who in the comic has been alive since Ancient Greece. Her team has influenced historical events for centuries, protecting the world of mortals. But the technologically advanced modern age makes it much more difficult to operate in the shadows. When a group of greedy mortals discovers their immortality, Andy and her team must do anything to stop them from obtaining and monetizing their power.
Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Secret Life of Bees, Beyond the Lights) directed the movie. And the comic’s own Greg Rucka wrote the script. The acclaimed source material navigates the difficulties and tragedies of being immortal. The team has witnessed dozens of wars and plenty of death. Hopefully, with the comic’s writer penning the script, the Netflix adaptation will hit all the crucial character notes.
Netflix is seemingly always working on content. Earlier this month, the streaming service announced that a series based on the popular horror movie The Grudge is in development. One of its more recent movies, the Chris Hemsworth-starring Extraction, was such a hit that a sequel was almost immediately greenlit. The Old Guard was only five issues long, though it received a sequel series last year. If its adaptation does well, Netflix may have another franchise on its hands.
