A few weeks back, the Hollywood Reporter dug up some interesting news. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is to star in a big screen adaptation of beloved building smasher sim, Rampage.

MAME: Rampage (Original Arcade game)

Reports are coming in that Johnson could be joined by director Brad Peyton, who recently directed San Andreas. This would mark the third time that Johnson and Peyton have worked together. San Andreas recently enjoyed the number 1 slot in the box office on its opening weekend. The disaster flick blew past all contenders and now sits with a worldwide gross of $460 million. Sources say that the Rampage adaptation will stay true to the games, with three giant monsters wreaking havoc across the nation’s major areas, and Johnson trying to find a way to stop them.

Rampage was originally created by Midway and released in 1986 for arcades and eventually consoles. The game’s story goes that three individuals, a middle aged man, a young woman and an elderly man, were experimented on in some way at a place called Scum Labs. They were transformed into a giant gorilla, lizard and wolf, respectively and started their campaign of destruction. 4 sequels appeared in the following years. Rampage: World Tour, Universal Tour, Through Time and Total Destruction. Each sequel brought new characters, power ups, and updated visuals to the series.

Rampage, the movie, will begin production in Summer 2016 and released in 2017.
