Call Of Duty games have evolved over the years. From standard run-and-gun affairs into sprawling live service behemoths. As you would expect, as the games have grown, so has the file size. We have seen Call Of Duty’s size demands absolutely balloon. From a now relatively modest 49GB for Advanced, to the bloated creature we have today. Already weighing in at a sizable 175GB at launch, Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare is now officially out of control. Following recent updates, the file size reached 220GB, and finally to the ludicrous size today of 250GB. This leads us to the objectively true statement: Modern Warfare’s file size is way too big!
So, from the now small 175GB back in the simpler times of 2019, how did we get to this point? Well, maybe, just maybe Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare has a touch too much content. A single install gets you:
- The single-player campaign
- The still relatively new Warzone battle royale mode
- The enormous standard multiplayer mode
- The co-op mode, Special Ops
That’s a lot of game. It really is no wonder that Call Of Duty’s file size is so bloated. While on console gamers can pick and chose which bits they want cluttering their hard drive, PC gamers have no such luck. If you’re on PC, you get the full deal or nothing. As Twitter-user Battle(non)sense points out, 250GB is larger than most people’s SSD. It’s a decent chunk out of most people’s hard-drive, and budget or micro-PC builds may be out of luck entirely!
So, this naturally brings us to the next question. What could you install instead of the 250GB behemoth that is Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare? The boring answer to this is literally anything. You’d be hard-pressed to find another game on PC that demands quite so much of your precious hard drive space. The fun answer though is much better. With the space you may have used to install Call Of Duty, you could instead install the original 1993 Doom 104,600 times! Doom doesn’t do it for you?
You could install three versions of similarly bloated MMO World Of Warcraft, and still have 40GB to spare. However, the scholars and intellectuals amongst you will know that hard drive space could really only go to one game. The most veritable and timeless of classics; you could use your saved 250GB to install E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial 41.6 million times!
With Call Of Duty: Black Ops coming soon, hard drives around the world will be shaking in fear!
