Honestly, who doesn’t love a good beat ’em up from time to time? There’s plenty of great ones out there, from the 3D adventures of Hong Kong to the arcade-style of Streets of Rage 4. It’s a great genre for those who want to just beat enemies to stellar soundtracks and only grows as time goes on. Today, a new contestant joins the pack. 9 Monkeys of Shaolin is now available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch bringing a fresh ninja beat ’em up experience to players. You can check out the latest trailer below.

What is 9 Monkeys of Shaolin?

[US] 9 Monkeys of Shaolin — Launch Trailer

9 Monkeys of Shaolin follows closely with old-school fighting games to give an authentic experience in the modern-day. If you’re a fan of classic SEGA or SNES games of the genre, the developers promise you’ll fall in love. 9 Monkeys of Shaolin follows the story of Chinese fisherman Wei Cheng, whose friends and family were murdered as part of a pirate raid. As one of the last members of the village, you take it upon yourself to fight back and serve justice. With the basics of martial arts in hand and a trusty battle staff, you traverse the world of Medieval China, stopping at nothing to slaughter the pirates. Will you be the one to avenge your family’s deaths?

There is a promise of a compelling story and high-octane action in 9 Monkeys of Shaolin. Dmitry Kachkov, the founder of developer Sobaka Studios, is excited about this as well:

We’re extremely happy that this day has finally arrived! Gamers across the globe can dive into the legend of Shaolin monks starting now! It’s been a long and exciting three-year journey and we used all the experience we had earned to create a unique game full of adventures, challenges and that distinct warm atmosphere of good old-fashioned kung fu action movies.”

Doesn’t sound too bad for a beat ’em up if you ask me. I’d love to hear your thoughts though. Will you be playing 9 Monkeys of Shaolin on release? What beat ’em up is your favorite? Let me know in the comments below!
