This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information.

Whilst they were financially successful, it’s safe to say that Paul W. S. Anderson’s Resident Evil movies didn’t really capture the feel of the games and went on to become their own crazy beast. There was some joy to be had in following the journey of Milla Jovovich’s Alice, but overall, they were a disappointment to many fans. Next year, Johannes Roberts will aim to put things right with a rebooted Resident Evil movie that aims to capture the feeling of the first few games.

Little is know about the movie at this stage, however, it will act as an origin story that ties into the first (and best) two games in the series. Filming for the REboot only began in October this year, but as of today, Sony Pictures has tweeted confirmation that filming has wrapped, and the movie is still on schedule to hit its release date, said to be September 9, 2021.

Resident Evil

Hopefully, this means a trailer won’t be too far away as the above picture doesn’t really give too much away. There have been pictures of the Spencer Mansion set, as well as casting news in recent months, but other than that there hasn’t been too much information thrown our way. With a bar that’s been set pretty low so far, we can at least look forward to seeing how the secrets of the Spencer Mansion present themselves on the big screen.

After a period of declining quality, the future seems much better for the Resident Evil franchise. Not only is this movie on the way, but there’s also another CG movie, a Netflix series, Resident Evil: Village, and plenty of other games in development if recent leaks are to be believed.

Hopefully, this reboot manages to capture the feel of the early games. Let’s see when we get the first trailer. In the meantime, let us know your thoughts on the franchise in the comments.
