Christopher Plummer has passed away at the age of 91. According to Deadline, the actor passed peacefully in his Connecticut home on Friday morning. Elaine Taylor, his wife of 53 years, was by his side. Plummer’s career lasted over 70 years, during which he won an Oscar, a Golden Globe, two Emmys, and two Tonys. He starred in many classics and will undoubtedly be missed in the entertainment world. Lou Pitt, manager and close friend to Plummer, issued the following statement:

Chris was an extraordinary man who deeply loved and respected his profession with great old fashion manners, self-deprecating humor and the music of words. He was a national treasure who deeply relished his Canadian roots. Through his art and humanity, he touched all of our hearts and his legendary life will endure for all generations to come. He will forever be with us.”

The Life and Career of Christopher Plummer

Christopher Plummer was born in Toronto on December 13, 1929. He worked on stage and in radio productions before making his New York debut in 1954 with The Starcross Story. He’d go on to star in many Broadway productions over the course of five decades. He won Tonys for 1973’s Cyrano and 1996’s Barrymore.

Plummer’s film debut would follow shortly after his Broadway one. He appeared in 1958’s Stage Struck, directed by the great Sidney Lumet. However, his first major film role (and one that he is still fondly remembered for) was 1965’s The Sound of Music. Plummer played Captain Von Trapp opposite Julie Andrews in the classic musical. Other notable films include 1970’s Waterloo, 1992’s Malcolm X, 2001’s A Beautiful Mind, and 2011’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Despite his lengthy career, Plummer didn’t win an Oscar until he won for 2010’s Beginners, for which he became the oldest person to win the award at 82. He also won a Golden Globe for the role. Most recently, he earned another Oscar nomination for famously replacing Kevin Spacey in 2017’s All The Money in the World and starred in 2019’s fun murder mystery, Knives Out.

Plummer also turned in some impressive vocal performances. He voiced Henri in 1986’s An American Tail, Charles Muntz in 2009’s Up, and Arngeir in Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Our condolences go out to Plummer’s family at this time of his unfortunate passing.
