Ever wondered what happens to Michael Keaton’s Dark Knight? Finally, almost three decades later, DC comics will continue his story. Titled “Batman 89,” the comics series will chronicle further events in Bruce Wayne’s life — the Batman played in the movies by Michael Keaton.

After Keaton left the Batman franchise following Batman Returns, the movies continued with other actors playing Bruce Wayne. Val Kilmer played the Caped Crusader in Batman Forever, while George Clooney was handed the reins for Batman & Robin. Unfortunately, neither of them could capture the essence of the character quite like Keaton.

Fans always craved to see more of Keaton’s Batman, but it never came to be. However, DC recently announced a return. DC’s Batman ’89 will continue the story of Keaton’s Dark Knight. Sam Hamm, the screenwriter for Batman (1989), will write the comics. Joe Quinones will provide the art. It’ll release as a digital-first series, building on the story developed in Tim Burton’s movies, with a similar artistic style. There will be 12 issues in total. The first six will become available on July 27, with the next six releasing weekly after that.

There are rumors that Michael Keaton is returning for the upcoming Flash movie in the DCEU. However, that will more than likely be a cameo. Do not expect these comics to tie into a possible Michael Keaton Batman return in The Flash.

Additionally, DC also announced a comic book return for Christopher Reeves’ Superman. Similarly, titled Superman ’78, the comic will tell stories set within the world created by Richard Donner and Christopher Reeve in Superman: The Movie. Known as cult movies, many fans will be very interested in returning to this world. Rob Venditti (Hawkman) and artist Wilfredo Torres will oversee our return to Metropolis. Superman ’78 will also release on July 27.

Both comics will release as six printed comics between August and October. A hardcover copy will be available for Batman ’89 in October, followed by Superman ’78 in November.
