Edgar Wright’sย Last Night in Soho Trailer has dropped, and as expected, it looks gorgeous. Many know Edgar Wright as the adrenaline-inducing maestro of montage. He has brought us such classics as the Cornetto Trilogy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End), Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,ย andย Baby Driver. Finally, Wright, an admitted fan of horror and thrillers, has finally fully committed to making a full-on psycho-thriller.

Wright’s claim to fame was directing the beloved British comedyย Spaced. He and fellowย Spaced cohorts, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost would go to launch all of their careers into the stratosphere when they teamed up to bring us the first installation of the Cornetto Trilogy, Shaun of the Dead. Apart from the thriller and horror portions and homages seen in the Cornetto films, we have seen Wright briefly dip his toes into the horror genre back in 2007. It was a horror parody trailer segment in Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse, along with other notable horror filmmakers (Eli Roth and Rob Zombie).

A Film Nerd’s Love Letter to a Genre

Until now Edgar Wright has dabbled by adding bits and pieces to the thriller and horror genres within his films but has never fully dived into something as serious and psychological as this current project. Last Night in Soho is his love letter to the genre that he constantly raves about. It is the genre that initially released his inner film nerd. With Last Night in Soho’s trailer you can see remnants of the lonely and paranoid nighttime urban crawls, that we remember seeing in Nicolas Roeg’s 1973 film, Don’t Look Now. Within the trailer, we experience exquisite flashes of neon that hearken back to Dario Sargento’s 1977 gore-ridden masterpiece, Suspiria. He even gives us the paranoia of the film’s inhabitants and seemingly naivety of the main heroine, which brings strong Robin Hardy’s The Wicker Man feels.

What can we ultimately expect from this film? Well, the editing is going to be amazing. Paul Machliss (A Wright film veteran) will be returning as an editor for the film. Both he and Wright, as mentioned before, have a penchant for brilliant montage sequences. The cuts we see in their past films together have made us laugh and have aided in propelling the action that we often see. This time, we should expect them to bring us plenty of thrills. The film has the potential to be brilliant, especially if they manage to amplify the creepiness with the post-production that makes these two so well known.

The Plot Thickens…in Soho

So far, all we know is the main character, Eloise (Jojo Rabbit’s Thomasin McKenzie), is an aspiring fashion designer. In the trailer, we can see her jumping back in forth into the 1960s as she appears to be slowly turning into her supposed fashion idle played by Anya Taylor-Joy. It is to be expected that the psychological aspect could have our title character potentially losing herself to time. Many conclusions and ideas of the story’s direction might be drawn from the film’s title.

Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho’s release is still undecided due to the pandemic. Edgar Wright does intend for the film to have an initial theatrical release so the film can be seen as intended. According to him, he doesn’t mind waiting until that is possible. With brilliant production and post-production potential, a well-versed film nerd and visual at the helm, stunning cast, and intriguing plotline; there is much to get excited for. Just watch the trailer.
