Cruella de Vil Origin Story
When Disney initially announced an origin story for Cruella de Vil, fans had concerns that this movie seems to actively dismantle.
Fans were concerned that Disney was trying to make a sympathetic villain out of a puppy killer. But the movie’s interpretation of the titular character is actually more similar to, Hello, Cruel Heart. The novelization of Cruella focuses more on how the road that led to her iconic fur obsession.
Fans were also concerned that Emma Stone wouldn’t be able to live up to Glenn Close’s iconic performance. But the Cruella reviews all have one thing in common: critics love Stone’s performance.
Cruella Reviews
Sandy Kenyon says Cruella manages to “crack the code” of creating a script around an unrepentant villain that is both satisfying and entertaining. Kenyon goes to call it:
This blend of drama and comedy is especially tough to pull off, but thanks to the talented cast, performing at the top of their games, this movie scores high enough to be worth the wait.”
Ani Bundel calls Cruella “hobbled by Disney’s dogged need to be child-friendly.” However, Bundel goes on to describe the performances of Emma Stone and Emma Thompson as:
[An] utter delight together on screen, fabulous when they’re sniping at other people and perfect when they save their best cut downs for each other.”
The only thing critics seem to love as much as Stone’s performance, is the fashion. Bundel even refers to Cruella as “The de Vil Wears Prada.” This a tongue-in-cheek reference to The Devil Wears Prada. Another film that followed a young woman’s path to success in a treacherous world of fashion.
