Alec Baldwin gave his first official interview with ABC News after the fatal accident on the set of Rust. Speaking to George Stephanopoulos, Baldwin relived the events of what happened the day that a gun he was holding went off and took the life of Halyna Hutchins.

One important factor that Baldwin made clear was that he did not pull the trigger. “I would never point a gun at anyone and pull the trigger at them, never,” Baldwin told Stephanopoulos. A witness of the event confirmed that Baldwin did not pull a trigger. Baldwin also made it clear that he was told there was no live ammo in the gun. “A live round isn’t supposed to be anywhere near the set. I don’t have anything to hide.” Baldwin stated that someone put live ammo in the gun, though he is not sure who.

Baldwin was emotional describing the type of person Hutchins was. He referred to her as a person who everyone liked. He also expressed grief at her infant son not having a mother anymore. He also addressed his own grief at the backlash he faced, including insinuations from former President Donald Trump that Baldwin probably did the shooting on purpose. Baldwin portrayed Trump in a negative light on Saturday Night Live. Baldwin is presently concerned with his family, unsure of what the future of his career will look like.

The incident in question took place on October 22 on the set of Rust when a prop gun in Baldwin’s hand went off and killed Hutchins, the director of photography, and wounded the film’s director Joel Souza. While Baldwin did give some comments to TMZ on a brief interview on the side of the road, this was Baldwin’s first interview for a major network since the incident occurred.
