We can’t be certain of many things in life, but there’s one thing that we can always count on. A new year brings with it new movies. Of course, whether or not this year’s movies are good is not so certain. That said, here are the Top 10 anticipated movies we are looking forward to watching in 2022. The ones that have the most potential. The ones that give us hope that it’s gonna be 2022 and not 2020-2. Please, Hollywood, don’t let us down!

10) Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (May 6, 2022)

Doctor Strange

Sam Raimi returns to the superhero genre with the Doctor Strange sequel. This one’s been victim to multiple delays, but if the world behaves itself this year, we will finally see Benedict Cumberbatch’s strangely-compelling cheekbones return to the big screen, accompanied by a big red cape. As the name implies, the plot will further embellish on the multiverse established in Loki and No Way Home. What’s more, we’ll see Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch for the first time since WandaVision. It’s an exciting time to be a Marvel fan.

9) Elvis (June 24, 2022)

Elvis movie

Austin Robert Butler stars as ‘the King’ in this upcoming biopic chronicling Elvis’s relationship with manager “Colonel” Tom Parker, played by Tom Hanks. There’s no doubt that Elvis is a musical legend and it’ll be interesting to see how Director Baz Luhrmann depicts his life. And honestly, given the heap of superhero and fantasy blockbusters of recent times, it’s a nice change of pace to watch the story of a real-life superhero instead. One can only hope it’s as entertaining as 2019’s Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. But hey – this is the same Director who did 1998’s Romeo + Juliet and 2001’s Moulin Rouge. Plus, it has Tom freakin’ Hanks – despite the lack of details, there’s still reason to be excited!

8) Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (April 8, 2022)

Knuckles

Jeff Fowler’s 2019 Sonic the Hedgehog was one of the most pleasant surprises of that year. A fun-filled family-friendly action romp, the first movie was a commercial success, giving us a lovable Blue Blur while bringing Jim Carrey back to the big screen. Given this, we can’t wait to see how Fowler and his team adapt Tails and Knuckles for the film. After all, Idris Elba already sounds great as Knuckles and, if he does blow it, at least we’ll see more of Jim Carey as Dr. Robotnik. This movie will be pure fun to watch for kids and adults alike in 2022.

7) Thor: Love and Thunder (July 8, 2022)

Thor has never been the most exciting hero in the MCU. So much so, Taika Waititi is oft-credited for rejuvenating the character in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. The Kiwi Director cut Thor’s hair, took his hammer, and gave him some wit, which has mostly remained with his character ever since. Therefore, it’s good news that Waititi is taking the director’s chair again for Love and Thunder, which has Natalie Portman reprise her role as Jane Foster – and as a female Thor. Needless to say, we’re excited.

6) Uncharted (February 18, 2022)

Uncharted

Uncharted is already a divisive film, a month before release. Why? Well, Tom Holland is considered too young for the role and Mark Wahlberg doesn’t have his character’s iconic mustache. Needless to say, this doesn’t rank well with videogame purists – although the latest trailer does indeed show the mustache in some scenes. Mustache matters aside, however, Uncharted promises to be a thrilling action blockbuster in the same vein as Indiana Jones. And after the superhero craze, maybe watching heroes without capes might be in order.

5) Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part One (October 7, 2022)

Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can. Well, he can also do what spiders can’t – like, say, traveling between universes. The web-slinger, Miles Morales, in this case, does exactly that in Across the Spider-Verse Part One, which has him bump into Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld), Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson), and even Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac). Here’s hoping that Chris Miller and Phil Lord take the emotional core of what made the first movie such a success and expand on it in a satisfying way.

4) Top Gun: Maverick (May 27, 2022)

Top Gun

The sequel to one of the most iconic movies of all time, Top Gun: Maverick has a lot riding on its jet-sized back. Yet, the return of Tom Cruise (who refuses to age) and Val Kilmer (as Maverick and Iceman respectively) alongside some more impressive aerial acrobatics leaves us excited. And given how much Cruise has developed in terms of his stunt-work since 1986, there’s good reason for that. Now, if they just avoid those cheesy ‘Take My Breath Away’ romantic montages from the first movie, this could be the movie to watch in 2022.

3) Lightyear (June 17, 2022)

Lightyear

Lightyear may well be the Toy Story spin-off we never asked for. However, if what we’ve seen so far is any indication, it’s one we’re hotly anticipating. This gorgeously-animated sci-fi flick trades Tim Allen for Chris Evans as young Buzz Lightyear, in a story taking place in its own universe. In other words, it’s the movie that Andy watched that compelled him to pick up a Buzz toy in the first place. And, let’s be frank, Lightyear will convince many real-life kids to do so, too. For the rest of us though, it’ll be another Pixar gem with levity and heart in spades, set in Space.

2) The Flash (November 4, 2022)

After previously failing to establish their ‘DCEU’, WB is using The Flash as a feature-length pilot to kick-start a cinematic multiverse. Not only can you expect to see Sasha Calle debut as Supergirl, but you can look forward to seeing Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck’s Batmen share the screen. Ezra Miller’s return as Barry Allen is also exciting of course, but only time will tell if Director Andy Muschietti can juggle all these iconic characters while delivering a good movie. While there is some worry WB might mess up again, this is one of 2022’s most anticipated movies because it’s interesting to see what they’ll do with the multiverse concept. Plus – Keaton and Affleck in the same picture? Take my money!

1) The Batman (March 4, 2022)

Batman

Okay, so we’re in two minds about this movie. On one hand, we’ve seen a dark Batman story done to death on-screen to the point this film might be unremarkable. On the other…well, Robert Pattinson’s performance as Batman seems too compelling to miss and, man, the new Riddler take is ominously exciting. The film’s director Matt Reeves is also shining a spotlight on the Batman-Catwoman relationship here in a way that was unexplored in The Dark Knight Rises (but was done beautifully in Tim Burton’s 1992 Batman Returns). There’s plenty of reason for it to be our most anticipated movie of 2022.

But that’s just our most anticipated movies. What are your Top 10 most anticipated movies to watch in 2022?
