Andrew Garfield spent a long time actively denying that he was involved in Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, as millions of viewers found out, he was lying and did return as Spider-Man in the film. Now, Garfield has finally broken his silence and spoken about his return as the character in No Way Home.

Garfield returned to this character who he last played in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014. Speaking with Variety, Garfield said that he never expected to “have a conversation again about potentially playing Peter Parker,” but that Marvel head Kevin Feige and Sony producer Amy Pascal convinced him to return.

I felt very excited just to be a fan again. But I got this call from Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige and Jon Watts with this idea. It was immediately undeniable. It sounded incredibly fun, incredibly spiritual — trippy and thematically interesting. On a base level, as a Spider-Man fan, just the idea of seeing three Spider-Men in the same frame was enough.

Garfield also mentioned that he was incredibly excited to work with Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland. In fact, an emotional line delivered in the climax of the movie was actually improvised and was simply an expression of how Garfield felt while working with the other two Spider-Man actors.

I think the first time we were all in the suit together, it was hilarious because it’s like just three ordinary dudes who were just actors just hanging out. But then also, you just become a fan and say, ‘Oh my god we’re all together in the suits and we’re doing the pointing thing!’ There’s a line I improvised in the movie, looking at [Maguire and Holland] and I tell them I love them. That was just me loving them.

During the interview, Garfield also answered an incredibly important question that is on fans’ minds: Will he return as Spider-Man in the future?

I mean, yes, definitely open to something if it felt right. Peter and Spider-Man, those characters are all about service, to the greater good and the many. He’s a working-class boy from Queens that knows struggle and loss and is deeply empathetic. I would try to borrow Peter Parker’s ethical framework in that, if there was an opportunity to step back in and tell more of that story, I would have to feel very sure and certain in myself.

Well, there you go, Garfield Spider-Man fans. It looks like No Way Home may not be the last we see of this character. The full interview can be read over at Variety now. Garfield had a huge 2021 overall with other noteworthy performances in The Eyes of Tammy Faye and Tick, Tick…Boom. At least now, Garfield can be relieved that he no longer has to deny his involvement in the latest Spider-Man film.
