Drew Wissler, or Runnerguy2489 as he’s known in the gaming community, has recently accomplished the remarkable feat of speedrunning The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time while being unable to see the game. He demonstrated his abilities earlier this year at Awesome Games Done Quick. Though he didn’t complete the game during the event, Wissler would go on to finish the game later. The run took 103 hours and concluded on October 14, 2015. His awe-inspiring 45-part run can be followed on his Youtube channel.

Unlike typical speedruns, Wissler does not use tricks and complicated maneuvers to skip parts of the game. He not only goes through each and every dungeon, but also obtains every Piece of Heart along the way. His most critical gear for the feat was his hearing, as he relied on sounds such as enemy footsteps or the particular clang of his sword colliding with certain objects to help identify his surroundings. “I had done a lot of speedrunning and knew the game very well, but there’s a lot of audio things you overlook as a sighted person,” Wissler says.

AGDQ is a speedrun video game charity event hosting two annual events: one in January, and the other during the summer months. Their next event will be held January 3, 2016 through January 10, 2016 at the Hilton Dulles Airport Hotel in Herndon, VA. Attendee registration will open around November 5, 2015. Watching players push the games and themselves to the absolute limit of possibility is an incredible experience, and it shows just how magnificently deep our favorite games truly are. Even more so, it demonstrates what a brilliant mind coupled with iron-clad determination can achieve.
