Netflix has released the first trailer for The Sea Beast (originally titled Jacob and The Sea Beast), an upcoming animated film launching exclusively on Netflix and the latest film from director Chris Williams. Williams is perhaps best known for his work on such films as Moana and Big Hero 6 for Disney.
What’s the Story for The Sea Beast?
The story for Netflix’s The Sea Beast will follow Maisie Brumble, a young girl who stows away on the ship of legendary monster hunter Jacob Holland in search of adventure. The first trailer provides a decent look into the world, characters, and conflict of the film and a release date of July 8.
The official synopsis proved for Netflix’s The Sea Beast reads:
“In an era when terrifying beasts roamed the seas, monster hunters were celebrated heroes – and none were more beloved than the great Jacob Holland. But when young Maisie Brumble stows away on his fabled ship, he’s saddled with an unexpected ally. Together they embark on an epic journey into uncharted waters and make history. THE SEA BEAST takes us to where the map ends, and the true adventure begins.”
The project was initially announced back in 2018 and had the original title of Jacob and the Sea Beast. It was teased as Williams’ first movie as a solar director and inspired primarily by the various fantastical beasts that adorned many old nautical maps of the sea. Williams is set to direct based on the original screenplay, written with Nell Benjamin, and will produce alongside Jed Schlanger.
The film will star Zaris-Angel Hator (The Midnight Gang) as Maisie Brumble, Jared Harris (The Terror, Chernobyl) as Captain Crow, Karl Urban (The Boys) as Jacob Holland, Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Without A Trace), Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey), and Kathy Burke (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy).
