Marvel and SiriusXM radio have teamed up to produce Marvel’s Squirrel Girl: The Unbeatable Radio Show!, a six-episode podcast series that follows the adventures of Squirrel Girl, one of Marvel’s more obscure heroes. The podcast debuted earlier today and is available on all the usual podcast platforms.
Marvel’s Squirrel Girl podcast features Doreen Green (Milana Vayntrub), a college student whose secret identity as the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl has recently been revealed to the world. Green teams up with her friends – both human and rodent – to muddle through the troubles this reveal brings in the form of a call-in radio show, which is something of a first for Marvel Entertainment. According to Marvel, the podcast’s script was written by Ryan North of Adventure Time fame, who has said that “a lot of the fun of the project initially was getting to work in a new medium, one where everything that happened had to be communicated through sound.”
Aside from Milana Vayntrub as Doreen Green, the Squirrel Girl podcast also features Crystal Lucas Perry as Nancy Whitehead, Doreen’s best human friend and radio show producer, and Erica Shroeder as Tippy T. Squirrel, Doreen’s best squirrel-friend and co-host. Additional cast members include Leo Shang as Ken Shiga, aka. The Unsinkable Koi Boi, David Morales as Chipmunk Hunk, Peter Hermann as Brain Drain, and Tina Benko as Rachel Oskar. Marvel regulars such as Iron Man and Spider-Man will also be making guest appearances as the cast battles call-ins from villains looking to stir up trouble.
The History of Squirrel Girl
Marvel’s Squirrel Girl podcast follows four years of Squirrel Girl comics where the titular hero defeats Marvel foes like Thanos and Doctor Doom. This might provide a hurdle for non-comic book-readers, but Ryan North has a history of making his comics – and his podcast – accessible to everyone.
“I wanted the comics to be accessible so that if you don’t have 50 years of Marvel knowledge, you can still enjoy it,” North told Variety. “[For] this podcast, I wanted the same thing, where if you had been reading the book for five years, this picks up right where it left off. But if you have not, you’re not going to show up and feel like you’ve missed something.”
Marvel’s Squirrel Girl: The Unbeatable Radio Show! is available on all major podcast platforms, including Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
