Marvel’s “Who Is” series is launching on Marvel Unlimited today. The digital comic series introduces readers to the histories of some of Marvel’s mightiest. First up is Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch, and America Chavez. It makes sense that Marvel would begin with these two heroes as they are about to get a lot of screen time in the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel. Until then, readers can get to know the characters in these handy virtual comics.
What Does This “Who Is” Series Have to Offer?
Who is…The Scarlet Witch dives straight into the character’s origins. From villain to hero and everything in-between, creators Steve Orlando, Rye Hickman, and Brittany Peer share what made Wanda the Scarlet Witch. Initially created in 1964 by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, Ms. Maximoff began as an X-Men villain. While her powers were originally explained as the ability to alter probability, that slowly evolved into sorcery and hex magic. Her tumultuous history can be quite confusing, even for die-hard fans. This digital comic is a great companion in understanding who the Scarlet Witch really is.
Meanwhile, America Chavez is a fairly new addition to the Marvel Universe. Created by Joe Casey and Nick Dragotta, the Young Avenger first appeared in 2011’s Vengeance mini-series as Miss America. However, the character has seen several transformations from different creative teams across the Marvel Universe. Most notably, Kieron Gillan and Jamie McKelvie altered the character to join the Young Avengers team. Not to mention Gabby Riviera’s take on the character in her own solo series made a few changes to the character’s history. She now refuses the Miss America moniker. Her digital comic biography, though short, is essential to anyone interested in the Doctor Strange sequel.
Why Is This Information Important?
While many Marvel fans are already familiar with Wanda Maximoff, it is important to get to know America Chavez. Especially as the MCU begins messing with the multiverse. The “Who is” series is the perfect opportunity to understand America’s powers and how they will play a role in the upcoming Strange sequel. Her multiverse-traveling powers will surely be a big part of the film as Doctor Strange attempts to fix the multiverse. As such, this “Who is” comic comes at the right time.
