At the ATX TV Festival, a Scrubs reunion panel took place with creator Bill Lawrence and cast members Zach Braff (JD), Donald Faison (Turk), Sarah Chalke (Elliot), John C. McGinley (Dr. Cox), Judy Reyes (Carla), and Neil Flynn (Janitor). When the idea of a revival or reboot of some kind got brought up, the creator and the cast agreed that it should happen.
Bill Lawrence said, “We’re gonna do it because people still care about it and we enjoy spending time with each other.”
The door is wide for possibilities of what this could look like. For Faison, one thing it could not be is a long, like an actively running series. A part of that is due to the business of Lawrence, who has since found huge success in his Apple TV series Ted Lasso.
“Here’s the deal: I think we all want a reboot and want to work together again but it couldn’t be a full season. Maybe like a movie or something we could shoot in a few months,” Faison said. “With everything Bill is doing now, he’s never going to be free again. If he finds the time, we’ll do it.”
During the panel, the idea of doing a musical was brought up. The original series had several moments with music, and an entire musical episode called My Musical from season six. To do a full-blown musical revival, Lawrence said it would depend on the cast, along with a quick, funny jab at Chalke.
“I don’t know if there will be a Scrubs musical unless this cast all say they want to do that,” Lawrence said. “Do you really want to hear Sarah sing? No, you don’t.”
Scrubs had a tremendously successful run from 2001 to 2010. During that time, it had won two Emmys along with award wins and nominations.
