The Creed and Rocky universe is going to expand. A Creed spinoff titled Drago is in development at MGM with Robert Lawton (Crave). No plot details are known about the project, but it is meant to center on Dolph Lundgren’s character of the same name. The character was seen in 1985’s Rocky IV and 2018’s Creed II. The second outing for Michael B. Jordan’s film also featured the character’s son, played by Florian Munteanu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings).

The timing of the Creed spinoff works out as Creed III is set to knockout theaters on November 23rd. That will see Jordan reprise his leading role while taking on the director’s chair.

Creed spinoff Drago is in the works

The Rocky franchise has proven to find new life with a new generation when Creed hit in 2015. Following Sylvester Stallone taking the son of Apollo Creed’s son Adonis under his wing. Through the films, we see the rise of Jordan’s titled character. Getting this success is a good motivator for the studio as it orders for the Creed spinoff.

The major shift coming for the third film will be the departure of Stallone. The actor has taken issue with producer Irwin Winkler having a hold on the rights. The actor has called him out as he wants to have something of the franchise for his children but has no ownership over the franchise that skyrocketed his career.

While the Creed spinoff is in early development, fans still have the third film to hold them over. Jordan will direct with Keenan, and Ryan Coogler (Black Panther) will write with Zach Baylin (King Richard). Jordan, Ryan Coogler, William Chartoff, Jonathan Glickman, Nicholas Stern, Charles Winkler, David Winkler, and Irwin Winkler will produce. Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian, and Adam Rosenberg will executive produce. It will star Tessa Thompson (Thor: Love and Thunder), Jonathan Majors (Da 5 Bloods), and Phylicia Rashad (Soul).
