One of the greatest JRPGs of the 16-bit era, Final Fantasy VI, is coming to Steam in about a week. Released as Final Fantasy III on the Super Nintendo, and brought to other systems later on, Final Fantasy VI follows a magic-user named Terra as she helps lead a rebellion against an evil empire. It has a huge cast of characters, a great villain, a great soundtrack from the legendary Nobuo Uematsu, and an open-ended story that encourages exploration.
The big issue with the Final Fantasy VI release for Steam is that it is not the original version. The above screenshot is from the original. The version that is being released on Steam, at least judging from the game’s page, is the somewhat washed-out looking mobile release from a few years ago.
Even with this slight issue, this release is important for a few different reasons. The first is that Final Fantasy VI is one of the most beloved games of the SNES era, so its release on Steam is sure to get people excited. The other reason is that this is the second game from a list of supposedly “leaked” Steam titles that contains games such as Final Fantasy X, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, and, of course, Half-Life 3.
Just because Guilty Gear Xrd –Sign- and Final Fantasy VI have now been confirmed does not mean that the rest of the list is true as well, but people will naturally get in a tizzy about it. People can keep Half-Life 3. I’ll stick with flying around in my airship and slamdancing with Moogles. Final Fantasy VI releases on Steam on December 16.
Excited to play Final Fantasy VI again? Will it be your first time with Terra and her friends? Or are you holding your breath for other games on the Steam list? Let us know in the comments!
