Monster fans rejoice! Toho has announced that the King of the Monsters will return to the silver screen to destroy Japan once again in Godzilla Resurgence,ย a traditional Godzilla film. Godzilla Resurgence (Shin Gojira) is a return for the series to the traditional Japanese kaiju film and is the first Toho Godzilla filmย since 2005’s Godzilla: Final Wars. The reasoning for the extended layoff for the iconic monster series was due to sluggish box office returns and Toho’s executive producer, Shogo Tomiyama, saying that instead of Godzilla being a mass media attraction, the only moviegoers they were attracting were children and hardcore fans of the series. They also wanted to give the property time to sit and allow for new advances in film and technology to give them more opportunities to showcase Godzilla since they had exhausted all options at the time.
In the 12ย years since the last film the only new contribution to the mythos of the creature was Legendary’s 2014 origin film Godzilla. Helmed by Gareth Edwards, the film received mixed reviews but was praised for its exciting, but limited monster fights and panned for too much focus on uninteresting human characters. With Toho returning to the series, fans can look forward to a “monster first” mentality and returns to iconic staples of the series such as miniature sets, traditional effects and what is considered something that is most important to the series, the actor in a rubber suit.
Godzilla Resurgence is slated to be released on July 29, 2016, in Japan with a planned launch in the US later in the year.
