Do you want to know what Storm Surge means in Fortnite? Fortnite introduces new game mechanics from time to time to keep players engaged and make the game more interesting. These new mechanics usually come with a unique and catchy name. Fortnite recently introduced a new game mechanic called Storm Surge for a few Fortnite World Cup Open Qualifiers streams. This guide will tell you everything about Storm Surge in Fortnite.

What Does Storm Surge Mean in Fortnite?

Storm Surge is a game mechanic that activates when too many players survive in the moving circles in World Cup Open Qualifiers matches. It will first damage players who have done minor damage to their opponents. Storm Surge was introduced to Fortnite in V6.31 Patch, and it aims to prevent players focus more on surviving rather than playing the game and killing opponents. You will receive damage from these Storm surges until you are not among the players’ lowest damage dealt or Storm finishes.

When the Storm Surge goes active, it will damage those players who have done the least damage to their opponents. Sometimes the damage will be high enough to kill those players. This encourages players to play the game more aggressively and to destroy their opponents rather than just surviving in the game. This game mechanic will activate in the following patterns based on the number of players left after the  first shrinking of the storm:

Number of Players Remaining Closing Circle
60 One
44 Two
30 Three
20 Four
16 Five
14 Six
12 Seven
6 Eight
2 Nine

How to Avoid Storm Surge Damage?

The only way to avoid taking damage from the Storm Surge is by being among the top players who have dealt the most damage to their opponents. If you are not among those players, you will take damage from the Storm Surge. This game mechanic encourages players to play more aggressively and to kill their opponents rather than just surviving in the game.
