In recent news, it appears that director George Miller is leaving the wasteland behind. George Miller had recently returned to the post-apocalyptic franchise in 2015 with the release of Mad Max: Fury Road. Tom Hardy took over the role of Max Rockatansky and the film garnered critical praise along with recently receiving two Golden Globe nominations for Best Motion Picture Drama and Best Director. With the success of Mad Max: Fury Road, George Miller had already been discussing ideas for a sequel that potentially would have been titled Mad Max: The Wasteland. Despite all this, George Miller seemed to have a change of heart in discussing the franchise in a recent interview,
“I won’t make more ‘Mad Max’ movies. ‘Fury Road’ with Charlize Theron, Zoë Kravitz, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Riley Keough was forever getting completed. If you finish one in a year, it’s considered a leap of faith. Start, stop, start again.” Adding, “I’ve shot in Australia in a field of wild flowers and flat red earth when it rained heavily forever. We had to wait 18 months and every return to the US was 27 hours. Those ‘Mad Maxes’ take forever. I won’t do those anymore.”
It has been rumored that the change of heart possibly comes from losing out on both nominations at the Golden Globes. Even so, were are undoubtedly still going to see a sequel Mad Max: Fury Road as Tom Hardy alone is currently signed on to reprise the role of Max for four more films. In October 2015, George Miller himself said in an interview that during the writing process for Fury Road they came up with two additional scripts for future films. Only time will tell if George Miller is really ready to leave the Road Warrior behind.

**UPDATE
It turns out George Miller is not done with Mad Max after all. The Oscar nominated Director said that he was misunderstood in the interview quoted above and still has two more stories to tell when it comes to the Road Warrior. Here is his most recent quote. Hopefully, this one sticks.
“That was a completely garbled interview. I was in New York and it was so noisy and the journalist was asking me questions on a red carpet at the National Board of Review. She completely got the wrong fragments of information that were just not true. I said no, [another Mad Max movie] will not be next, and she took that to mean I never wanted to make another Mad Max. It won’t necessarily be next, but I have two more stories.”
For now, fans can let out a sigh of relief since it appears that George Miller really isn’t going anywhere. Mad Max: Fury Road also just earned 10 Oscar nominations including Best Director.
