Actress Whoopi Goldberg is yet again apologizing for her comments about the influence of race on the Holocaust on Tuesday’s episode of The View. In February of this year, the ladies on The View discussed the banning of numerous books from schools, one of which was the graphic novel Maus by Art Spiegelman. During the discussion, Goldberg suggested that the Holocaust wasn’t about race but “white-on-white violence.” These comments resulted in Goldberg being suspended from The View for two weeks. WSVN explains that Goldberg appeared to double down on these comments, saying, “My best friend said, ‘Not for nothing is there no box on the census for the Jewish race. So that leads me to believe that we’re probably not a race.’” Goldberg went on to say, “The Holocaust ‘wasn’t originally’ about ‘racial’ or ‘physical attributes.’ It doesn’t change the fact that you could not tell a Jew on a street. You could find me. You couldn’t find them.” Goldberg’s comments have led to yet another wave of backlash forcing the actress to apologize for her remarks.
Actress Whoopi Goldberg Apology for Holocaust Comments
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Goldberg said, “I’m still learning a lot, and believe me, I heard everything everyone said to me. I believe that the Holocaust was about race, and I am still as sorry now as I was then that I upset, hurt, and angered people. My sincere apologies again, especially to everyone who thought this was a fresh rehash of the subject. I promise it was not. In this time of rising antisemitism, I want to be very clear when I say that I always stood with the Jewish people and always will. My support for them has not wavered and never will.”
Antisemitism has certainly been a significant issue as of late, with celebrities like Kanye West garnering criticism for antisemitic statements. With cancel culture being a controversial issue in and of itself, many are unsure of what to do with Whoopi Goldberg. Should the Sister Act actress be lumped together with other antisemites like Kanye West and be canceled accordingly? Share your thoughts in the comments.
