The System Shock series of games have been lauded as being highly influential in the narrative-driven FPS. With System Shock 3‘s announcement on Twitter, original co-creator Warren Spector has also announced he will join Paul Neurath’s (co-creator of System Shock’s original dev Looking Glass games) Otherside Entertainment to be the game’s director. This comes as a wonderful surprise to fans of the cult classics that are System Shock 1 and 2. Known for having a groundbreaking narrative and gameplay elements for the time, System Shock is also a considered one of the best cyberpunk series as well inspiring the critically acclaimed Deus Ex series. Another well -known title inspired by this series is Ken Levine and Irrational Game’s Bioshock series which was seen as a spiritual successor to System Shock.
Spector is a long time veteran of the industry but left game development three years ago to become a teacher at the University of Texas to teach game design. He has been at the forefront of the industry, calling for games to become even more accessible on top on telling stories that are on par with novels and film. He sports an impressive amount of influential games that he has worked on such as The Ultima series, The Wing Commander series, Thief, Deus Ex and Epic Mickey.
System Shock 3 has entered early development and does not have a projected launch date at this time.
