There are plenty of Mario Kart Tour characters, all in tons of different outfits and with different abilities throughout the mobile game. Putting together some of the two most iconic mainstays in mobile gaming, Mario Kart Tour combines gacha elements with the Mario Kart formula to create a cute but rather addictive game that players of all ages can enjoy. It’s one of Nintendo’s greatest ongoing mobile titles. New characters are being added all the time, which is why it’s such a hard thing to label characters based on their ability to Boomerang. By using the favored Mario Kart Tour tracks aligned with specific characters, players can get more items throughout a race. However, we have a list of the top characters for that, whether you need to get an achievement or just want advantageous picks for your play.
Which Mario Kart Tour Characters Have Boomerangs?
As you likely already know, Boomerangs are items exclusive to a few characters in Mario Kart Tour. There are a few Boomerang characters that you can find in Mario Kart Tour, but they are inherently limited. The Boomerang allows the user to hit an opponent, getting three shots before the Boomerang breaks. Boomerangs are immensely helpful in Mario Kart Tour because they can strike enemies more than once. This can be great for damage control, keeping enemies away, or striking multiple targets hanging out in front of you.
Only a few different kinds of characters can have Boomerangs. If every character could have them, the game would be pretty unbalanced. And while the list of drivers you can have is constantly in flux, we can reliably determine who you would want for specific strategies. Is there an achievement that requires you to use Boomerangs? Or do you just like Boomerangs as an item type and want to see them more often? If either of the answers to these questions is yes, then we have a short list below for you to help you strategize.
What Makes A Good Mario Kart Tour Character?
Before we get into the list, consider what makes a good Mario Kart Tour character in the first place. Each character has their own set of abilities, drawbacks, and advantages. No matter what your reason for favoring Boomerang characters is, there are other factors to take into consideration when you choose different characters. These two factors are simply understood: Favored Courses and Driver Skills. When considering which character to use, first consider the Mario Kart Tour tracks they favor. Driving on a favored track guarantees more items throughout the race. Driver Skill is important during a race, as it determines which abilities a character can use throughout a race. Thinks like Lucky Seven and Coin Box can help on many courses, for instance.
Coin Box is a helpful Driver Skill because they help players earn coins during combos, giving them a higher end-of-race score. Lucky Seven, in contrast, is an item that bundles seven randomly generated items together, giving the player a huge chance to make a comeback from wherever they land on the map during a race. This obviously makes some characters preferable to others when playing on specific maps or with specific objectives. However, considering the Boomerang Flower, what makes any Boomerang characters significant? Which ones are the best for each scenario and why? Below we have a few characters and recommendations on how you should use them. Favored Courses are simple: if a driver races on their Favored Course, they allow the corresponding drivers to get three items instead of one from a mystery box.
10. Kangaroo Yoshi
This cowboy hat-wielding version of Yoshi is a color palette not yet explored in the entire line of Yoshi that is present in Mario Kart Tour. He’s a yellowish Yoshi wearing red boxing gloves, a cute blue bandana, and orange boots. First introduced in 2019, the hopping Yoshi was first introduced being the driver of a double-decker bus. The Kangaroo version of Yoshi is technically part of a series, being another Australian reference alongside the Koala Mario. He has the Boomerang Flower as his special item, making him a popular pick for courses like New York Minute 1, 2, and others.
9. Mario Samurai
Mario, but he’s a Samurai warrior! First introduced during the Mario vs Luigi-themed events during Mario Kart Tour, this version of Mario is based on a costume he wears during Super Mario Odyssey on the Nintendo Switch. He wields the Boomerang Flower during races, making him one of many good characters to use if you prefer the item. He favors stages like Mario Circuit 1, both the normal and R versions.
8. Rosalina Volendam
Rosalina Volendam is one of the higher-tier Rosalina available in Mario Kart Tour. While there are several versions of Rosalina, she is the only one with this diverse of a style that isn’t based on a power-up or season. She appeared in some official art with the Daisy Farmer character. If you happen to have this somewhat rare unit, you can use it to roll for Boomerang Flowers during your races. One of her favored courses is Amsterdam Drift, where she can get more than a few items for each mystery box.
7. Luigi Knight
The metal-clad Luigi was an addition to the game along with Samurai Mario during the Mario vs Luigi Tour in 2022. His armor set is based on the knight armor from Mario Kart Life: Home Circuit. His signature kart is a high-end one called the Shielded Speedster. Given his aesthetic and the advantageous ability he has, for some, Luigi Knight is a prime character.
6. Toad Astronaut
Toad Astronaut is one of the newest characters on this list. He debuted in 2023 during the Space Tour. Along with Space Toadette, he was one of the racers you could roll for during the event. He works well in stages like GBA Battle Course, where he can receive far more items than usual. Combine that fact with his propensity for Boomerang Flowers, and you have yourself an endearing and useful character wrapped up into one. He doesn’t have many favored Mario Kart Tour tracks, but that doesn’t make him any less viable of a character.
5. Shy Guy Ninja
Shy Guy Ninja is a character introduced during the Ninja Tour in 2021. The use of the Boomerang Flower only makes sense here. The character is a ninja, after all, so why wouldn’t he use something like the Boomerang Flower? Some favored stages of his include the T version of Kalamari Desert, as well as Toad Circuit and Neo Bowser City. He’s become a relative fan favorite because of his cute animations and the fact that he’s a Shy Guy. Who doesn’t love Shy Guys?
4. Baby Mario
Baby Mario’s favored course is Mario Circuit 1T. Because of that, you can use him to pick up multiple items on Mario Circuit, which improves your chances of getting a Boomerang Flower. Add on Frenzy to that mix, and you have a recipe for Boomerang wielding fun for you and not your enemies. If you’ve been playing since launch, you may notice that some achievements require a few solid hits with the Boomerang or Boomerang characters. Some of these require ten hits in a row. So if you want to start practicing, getting in proper gear with Baby Mario on Mario Circut can make for some great practice.
Some achievements are only possible with characters on their Favored Courses. To clarify, you may want to look at these achievements more closely to make sure you’re reaching the right goal. Working with characters in their Favored Courses can always help work out in your favor. Baby Mario’s special item is the Boomerang Flower, making him instantly viable as a character, especially when placed on his Favored Track. He’s a normal character and is part of the game’s base roster. This is great because this means you won’t have to continuously roll for him.
3. Baby Luigi
Just like Baby Mario, Baby Luigi is a Normal character. However, he does not come with the base roster like his brother. He was implemented into the game in 2019. The event specifically was the Halloween Tour event. His special item is the Boomerang Flower, making him perfectly viable as a Boomerang character if you want to up your chances. During a beta test, Baby Luigi was a common character that players could unlock relatively easily. However, later, in pre-release, he was upgraded to become more of a rare draw due to his popularity. So if you like green Mario and don’t mind rolling a bit extra for him, you can have a stylish Boomerang character at your disposal.
If you want to do well as a Baby Luigi player, it’s worth noting what his Favored Course is. To get the most out of the character, consider going to DS Luigi’s Mansion. There, you can score three of an item at a time, posing for generous bonuses to your Boomerang Flower if you get any. Baby Luigi also has another advantageous course where he gets a few more items than normal. His second favored course is the SNES Mario Circut 1. However, don’t get the two confused. One of these, Luigi’s Mansion, offers Baby Luigi three items. For the SNES Mario Circut 1 track, the max amount of items he can get there is two.
2. Larry
Larry is a Common Driver. He doesn’t come along with the entire package of the game. That means you’ll ultimately have to roll for him. Not to worry, though, because he’s so common that you might just get him anyway, repeatedly. He has less advantageous Mario Kart Tour tracks at his disposal than other racers. However, he still has two item box advantages. For the three-item box advantage, he has the N64 Kalamari Desert, where he receives three item slots. On the 3DS Shy Guy Bazaar, he has two. And while the Boomerang item is not exclusive to him as a special item, he can still receive it. In addition to his special items and this possibility, this makes him quite a versatile character to use.
1. Boomerang Bro
Boomerang Bro is one of the rarer characters in our lineup of Boomerang characters in the game. He is a Super character added in a relatively recent update. Back in 2020, he was a new character with the highest propensity to get Boomerang Flowers in the entire roster. His kart size is medium. So if you prefer smaller characters, it may be best to stick with Baby Luigi. His only favored Mario Kart Tour track is Donut Plains, and he has a higher propensity for the Boomerang Flower.
