Horses have been a hallmark of the Legend of Zelda games since 1998, and the newest release  – Tears of the Kingdom – is no different. Similar to its predecessor, Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom offers a variety of wild horses for the player to find and tame across most of Hyrule. Getting a horse isn’t as simple as that, however. In order to keep the horse, you’re going to need to board it at one of the many stables you come across on your journey. If you don’t know how then this guide will walk you through how to board a horse at any one of Hyrule’s stables.

Step one of boarding a horse is, obviously, getting a horse. If you haven’t tamed any yet, then fear not, taming a wild horse is a fairly simple task. Tears of the Kingdom has small herds of wild horses scattered throughout Hyrule. If you’re still in the early game, then the best place to look is just south of Lookout Landing, where a couple of wild horses can be found grazing. The process for taming a horse in Tears of the Kingdom is identical to the one in Breath of the Wild: crouch, sneak up behind a horse, jump on its back by pressing A, and then spam L to soothe it until it stops trying to buck you off.

Once you’ve tamed a horse, then you’re going to need to find a stable to register it at. New players will likely end up at New Serene Stable, north-northwest of Lookout Landing and just across Carok Bridge. After arriving at the stable, talk to the stable manager – that’s the guy at the front desk – and he’ll ask you if you want to register your horse. Say yes, and you’ll be given a bridle and saddle as part of the 20 rupee registration fee. Congratulations, your horse is now registered! However, if you don’t want to bring your horse with you right now, then you can also board it at the stables.

Speak to the stable manager again and select the “Board a horse” dialogue option when it appears. Confirm your choice, and the stable will take your horse into its care. The stables in Tears of the Kingdom have a limit to how many horses you can board, so be sure to keep that in mind. If you change your mind, then swapping your horses out is as easy as going to one of the eleven stables across Hyrule and asking to take out a different horse.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is now available on Nintendo Switch.
