The season two finale of Gotham, which aired a short time ago, unleashed all of the Hell on the city, figuratively speaking. Between the Court of Owls and Hugo Strange raising the dead, Fish Mooney being raised, and the appearance of several new villains, Bruce Wayne is going to have to start keeping a long checklist. “The city we return to in season three will be very different than the city we leave at the end of season two,” says executive producer John Stephens. With so many evil personalities set loose, added to the progression of the Court’s goals, Gotham’s established storyline looks to be in for a dramatic re-interpretation.

One of the new villains, Dr. Jervis Tetch, better known as Mad Hatter, was scheduled to appear in season two, but due to the sheer amount of stuff going on, his character arc was pushed back. We’ll also be seeing the Tweedle Brothers, presumably as the hatter’s cohorts. Other despicable names include Solomon Grundy and an assassin called Talon who works for the Court of Owls. Makes sense – owls, talons. Ever notice how so many Batman villains are modeled around clowns? And birds.

Despite the over-abundance of bad guys in season three, Gotham’s central plot will seemingly revolve around the actions and motives of the Court of Owls, as was suggested by the finale where their interest in modern necromancy was brought to light. The question is how these two details, the new villains, and the Court, will inter-relate and play out. Could these extra pieces in fact be pawns themselves, or might we possibly even see a shaky alliance between good and evil that ends with an inevitable backstabbing? As John Stephens so eloquently put it, Pandora’s Box has been opened, but the one joy that supposedly accompanies the sorrows is nowhere to be seen.
