The latest trailer of the anticipated The Witcher series was shown in Summer Game Fest’s opening showcase. This is the last season we will see beloved Henry Cavil as Geralt since Liam Hemsworth will replace him. Many things were happening in the trailer, but the most important thing shown in the trailer was The Wild Hunt. The notorious group of specters led by Eredin that gamers know from Witcher 3. Some dialogue suggests the Wild Hunt would be the main antagonist of the new season and even the series from now on. If you want to know a little more about what or who the Wild Hunt is in the Season 3 of The Witcher series, you’ve come to the right place.
What Is the Wild Hunt?
The Wild Hunt, also known as Wraiths of Mörhogg in Skellige, is a group of specters riding and galloping in the sky. The riders in this group are actually the Aen Elle elves, one of the superior races of elves in the Witcher universe. They live in another world, and their magic and knowledge are much more advanced than human mages.
Their leader is Eredin Bréacc Glas, also known as the King of the Wild Hunt. He was a general in his world until he killed the king and took the throne for himself. Not only he has a charm that can persuade his followers to do what he wants, but he is also a brilliant strategist and an even more deadly fighter.
What Does the Wild Hunt Want?
Their goal and purpose in the books are to find and capture enslaved people from other worlds. They are one of the rare groups that can easily travel between worlds, compared to other witches and mages in the universe of Witcher. This goal was changed in the games, however. As explained in The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt, they want to find and use Ciri because of her Elder Blood, which gives them more power, and Elder Blood, which provides them with more power and also helps them travel between the worlds much easier and effortlessly.
The Difference Between the Show, Books, and Games
We have three different versions of The Wild Hunt across various adaptations depending on what we saw in the last season of The Witcher and what we might see in the next one. Before explaining the differences, it is important to know that the events of all three of The Witcher games are set after the events of the series’ final book. They are sequels to the books. On the other hand, the show is trying to follow the path of the books but also differs in many ways.
Starting with the books, it is interesting to know that Geralt never actually met the Wild Hunt in books written by Andrzej Sapkowski. Ciri met Eredin and another Wild Hunt member, but Geralt never did. Not only that, but The Wild Hunts aren’t the antagonist of the books; they are only mentioned a couple of times, coming and going.
As for the games, it seems Geralt used to run with the Wraiths of Mörhogg for a short period of time. Although Geralt does state that he doesn’t remember it because of the amnesia, he suffered after the events of the first Witcher game. Apart from that, the goal of The Wild Hunt also changes to pursuing the Elder Blood, leading to a big fight between them and Geralt and his friends.

As for the series, we still don’t know how they will pursue the existence of The Wild Hunt. The most significant change we saw in the last season of The Witcher was how Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer met the Wild Hunt. In the books, only Ciri meets with them, not others. If they do make The Wild Hunt antagonist of the series, it is a drastic change because they only become the antagonist in the games, which are considered sequels to the books.
That is everything you should know about the Wild Hunt in Season 3 of The Witcher series to help you understand them better once the first part of the third season starts on June 29.
