With the release date fast approaching, people who have bought Final Fantasy 16 will be able to preload the game starting June 20th, and the unlock time has also been confirmed. However, before you hit that download button, make sure you have enough free space available on your PlayStation 5. Unsurprisingly, the game’s file size is pretty big. Final Fantasy 16 will come weighing in at approximately 90 GB in size, and that is prior to getting any updates.
While the size of Final Fantasy 16 isn’t giving people PTSD from games like Modern Warfare 2, which is around 200 GB if you add in Warzone 2, it still isn’t small. The size is expected to increase even more after the day-one update comes out, along with future patches. Despite this, the information shared by PlayStation Game Size on Twitter provides a semblance of reassurance to fans. Given the number of massive game launches this year, and considering the scale of Final Fantasy 16, many had assumed that the game would surpass the 100 GB mark.
Final Fantasy 16 Was Almost On 2 Discs
Furthermore, the game’s size remains below the threshold for a single-disc release, a fact that Square Enix has taken advantage of. The same can not be said about another huge game that Square Enix is working on, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which requires 2 discs. Producer Naoki Yoshida made this announcement yesterday, highlighting that this was achieved within the past six months.
Previously, it was more likely that Final Fantasy 16 would become the first two-disc release on the PS5, but that honor remains unclaimed until the release of Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth. Nevertheless, this development suggests that significant efforts were dedicated to optimizing the game during the latter stages of its development.
It is quite odd, to say the least, that Square Enix is having trouble fitting current-generation games on one disc. While it is true that the scale and scope of games are increasing, the PlayStation 5 having an SSD meant that games would be able to access files faster, and would require less duplication of data during development. But that doesn’t seem to be the case with games that Square Enix is working on, at least for now.
