The new reveal trailer for Super Mario Bros Wonder has left many fans pleasantly surprised. After years of 2D Mario games stagnating with the same style, it’s nice to finally see some more variety. Already, the reveal trailer has showcased many reasons why the new 2D Mario game is the perfect direction for the series. Between the updated art style and interesting mechanics, Super Mario Bros Wonder already seems like the best improvement over the most recent entries of the New Super Mario Bros series. Although it may be too early to judge its quality, fans are happy for any change of pace available. With that being said, here are five reasons Super Mario Bros Wonder is an improvement over New Super Mario Bros.
As many fans know, New Super Mario Bros has been the premiere style of 2D Mario games since 2006. This puts the series of games at just around 17 years old. To put this into perspective, this has been the longest any individual 2D Mario series has ever run. New Super Mario Bros‘ longevity may be partially due to its massive popularity; however, over 17 years, the series has grown stale. With the same style and mechanics recycled from game to game, New Super Mario Bros was on its last leg. Already, the Super Mario Bros Wonder reveal trailer shows some promising changes.
5. Super Mario Bros Wonder’s Art Style Is a Highlight of the Game
From the moment the reveal trailer began, Super Mario Bros Wonder’s art style was enough to blow fans away. In the past, no Super Mario Bros game has taken on such an interesting style. Now, the graphics take on a beautiful 3D style with amazingly expressive animations. Although New Super Mario Bros 3D graphics were amazing in the past, over time, the art style lost its charm. Eventually, fans started to grow tired of the recycled style between games, pointing out that it made the games feel more corporate. Now, unlike previous games, Super Mario Bros Wonder is gushing with personality.
4. The Wonder Flower Gives Super Mario Bros Wonder an Interesting Mechanic
Previously, New Super Mario Bros mechanics tended to change very little about the game. Usually, new mechanics came in the form of power-ups, like the Mega Mushroom. However, this affected very little from a gameplay perspective. Though Super Mario Bros Wonder‘s Wonder Flower may be just another power-up, it affects the game on a massive scale. Based on each level, the Wonder Flower will warp the environment in interesting ways. For example, in one level, it brings all the pipes to life; in another, it causes Mario to grow and shrink. It’ll be interesting to see just how far the new 2D Mario game takes this new mechanic.
3. Super Mario Bros Wonder’s Level Design Is Fresh and Unique
One of the biggest criticisms of the New Super Mario Bros series is the level design. Oftentimes players are disappointed by the same eight recycled worlds and the unoriginal levels. Although only a hand full of levels were shown in the Super Mario Bros Wonder reveal trailer, many of them feel like improvements to older 2D Mario games. From bouncing on massive hippo creatures to riding a stampede, these levels all seem to have a huge amount of variety. Additionally, the Wonder Flower power-up is going to add another layer of unique mechanical design to each level.
2. Daisy Is Playable For The First Time
For the first time in the 2D Mario series, Daisy will be playable in Super Mario Bros Wonder. Although this may seem like a small change, fans of the character were very happy to see the princess join the playable roster. Additionally, the Yellow Toad, Princess Peach, and Luigi make their returns as well. It’s interesting to note that in previous New Super Mario Bros, Toadette took the role of Princess Peach and could transform into her using the crown power-up. Adding the two princesses is a decision that is sure to make many fans happy.
1. The Music Is Some Of The Best Mario Has To Offer
The highlight of the Super Mario Bros Wonder reveal trailer would have to be the game’s music. Although the New Super Mario Bros series did have some iconic and unforgettable tracks, the music for this new entry already sounds incredible. The reveal trailer opens with an Acappella score that perfectly fits Mario‘s fantastical and playful tone. Additionally, the Warp Flower’s theme falls in line with stand-out Mario tracks like Loopdeloop Galaxy from Super Mario Galaxy. Hopefully, Nintendo will release more trailers soon, giving players another chance to hear more of its amazing music.
