5 TV Shows Like The Witcher to Watch
If you have been following the entertainment industry, especially TV Shows and Movies, then you probably noticed that TV Shows have become equal to, or in some cases better, than cinema. Especially when it comes to big fantasy adventures, it seems that studios tend to create TV series rather than make movies. The biggest asset of TV shows is of course their length which allows showrunners and writers to put more details, characters, and world-building in the series. This will also give the audience to choose from multiple shows available in the same genre like fantasy. So we’ve picked 5 great TV shows like Netflix’s The Witcher to watch while you are waiting for Season 3, Volume 2.
1 – Mandalorian
It may seem odd at first to suggest a series that is more sci-fi than fantasy for people looking for something similar to The Witcher. On the surface, both series may seem very distant, but at the core, they have numerous similarities. The biggest of them are their protagonists. Both Din Djarin and Geralt or Rivia are professional hunters that tend to not speak very much and stay focused on what they are doing. Not only that but both of them are tasked to protect a child from the dangers of the world. Not to mention the fantastic action sequences of Mandalorian that are some of the best we’ve seen in the Star Wars universe. So if you enjoyed the relationship between Ciri and Geralt in The Witcher, make sure to check Mandalorian as well.
2 – Merlin
Merlin is rather an old series compared to other entries on the list. Nonetheless, it has a lot of shared qualities with The Witcher that will keep you busy and bring you joy while watching it. The story revolves around the friendship of the great wizard Merlin and England’s famous king, Arthur Pendragon. While the series may not have the action sequences of The Witcher, it will quench your thirst for magic and wizardry. Just like The Witcher, the Merline TV show is packed with numerous mythical creatures and stories alongside some political schemes as well. Merlin is the best option for those who are more interested in friendship and the wizardry of The Witcher.
3 – His Dark Materials
Like The Witcher series, His Dark Materials was based on a fantasy novel series by the same name. The story is about a young girl named Lyra that stays in Oxford in order to find her missing friend. This is the first similarity between The Witcher and His Dark Materials; the hunt for a missing person. As the story progresses you will be introduced to a variety of creatures, magic, and of course several universes. This show will be most enjoyed by those who loved the world-building of The Witcher.
4 – A Discovery of Witches
While The Witcher series is a dark fantasy filled with horrible creatures and killing monsters, it also has a unique and touching love story in it as well. A Discovery of Witches on the other hand is mostly about those romances. Set in a fantasy world where Diana Bishop unintentionally finds a bewitched manuscript that unravels some secrets about magic and magical creatures. The show has a great story powered by amazing performances and, above all, heart-touching romance and chemistry between characters. If you are the kind of person that loved the chemistry between Geralt and Yennefer in The Witcher, then you should not miss A Discovery of Witches.
5 – Game of Thrones
From the very first season of The Witcher, many people compared it to Game of Thrones and even GoT fans were happy to find a series with the same dark and twisted fantasy world. Game of Thrones may not share the same magical creatures and witchcraft as The Witcher but there are tons of other similarities. The fight sequences in both series are fantastic, both of them have a wide range of characters, set in a world full of political plots and betrayals where destiny and faith play an important role. If you liked the political and drama aspect of The Witcher series, do not hesitate to watch Game of Thrones as well.
The Witcher Season 3 Volume 2 will be released on July 27 on Netflix.
