THE REAL GHOSTBUSTERS, 1986-1991
This article is over 9 years old and may contain outdated information.

If you grew up in the late 1980’s or early 1990’s, you are probably more than familiar with The Real Ghostbusters, the animated spinoff that was spawned from the hit film. After running for seven seasons with 140 total episodes, I guess you could say it was a pretty big hit. It was certainly a sad day when the show was finally put back into its grave, and for more than two decades fans young and old alike have been pining for something similar.

Well, I’m pleased to tell you that just that is happening, as Sony has announced plans for a new animated Ghostbusters series only a few weeks before the premiere of the new Ghostbusters movie. Hold on to your proton packs, because Ghostbusters: Ecto Force is coming sometime in 2018.

I ain’t afraid of no ghost.

The new animated series won’t feature the cast of the fresh take on the movies, and in fact, it isn’t even set in the same time period. Rather than focusing on New York, the animated will reportedly be more global in scale, following the crew around the world as they battle the supernatural in 2050 – with a little help from local iterations of the Ghostbusters squad. That’s right, it looks like Bill Murray and Co have officially been developed into a Slimer-splattin’ franchise. The full media release below:

A brand new animated television series, GHOSTBUSTERS: ECTO FORCE, will further expand the Ghostbusters cinematic universe and focus on a new generation of Ghostbusters in the year 2050 who capture ghosts around the world with help from local teams—and some very cool gear! The younger-skewing Sony Pictures Animation project is being creatively spearheaded by Ivan Reitman and his production company Ghost Corps. GHOSTBUSTERS: ECTO FORCE is eyeing an early 2018 debut.

Certainly some interesting concepts, particularly in regards to the expansion of the current cinematic universe – could we see some cameos from the past or current cast? Perhaps even the return of a villain or two. After all, what is dead may never die – or perhaps we’re mixing our TV shows a little too much there. Either way, ghostbusting fans both young and old should be looking forward to some fresh new animated faces in the near future. Until then, Stay Puft!
