Box Office Results for the Weekend of June 24

In its second weekend, Finding Dory took the #1 spot at the box office with estimated domestic earnings of $73.2 million. This is the biggest second weekend Disney has had in 2016 thus far, besting last month’s Captain America: Civil War.  Pixar’s sequel to 2003’s Finding Nemo now holds the record for the largest second-weekend gross by an animated film. Just 10 days into its run, the film has already grossed almost $400 million worldwide.

Dory’s earnings were more than enough to fend off this weekend’s competition. Independence Day: Resurgence took second place with approximately $41 million. Made on a budget of $165 million, the film was unable to duplicate the success of its predecessor. The good news is that it fared much better internationally, pulling in over $100 million across several markets. Taking the mixed-to-negative reviews into consideration, it remains to be seen how successful it will be in the long run.

Holdover Central Intelligence took the number three spot this weekend with over $18 million. The buddy comedy starring Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson has raked in almost $70 million domestically. With a budget of about $50 million, the film is well on its way to making a sizable profit.

While it only secured fourth place, The Shallows starring Blake Lively exceeded expectations with $16 million. In only its first weekend, The Shallows has nearly matched its reported budget of $17 million. It also scored the best critically among the new releases on the aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Wrapping up the top five this weekend is the Matthew McConaughey-led Free State of Jones. The historical Civil War drama only earned about $7.5 million, making it the lowest opening of a McConaughey vehicle in a decade. Given its subject matter, it may not have clicked with audiences because few films like this are released during the summer. However, it has the potential to do better during the upcoming Fourth of July weekend.

Disney hopes to continue their success next weekend with their release of Steven Spielberg’s The BFG. It will go up against fellow wide releases The Legend of Tarzan and The Purge: Anarchy.
