Since his work with Titanic and the more recent Avatar, James Cameron became widely respected for his knowledge of how to create quality films. In an interview recently, Cameron gave his opinion about Star Wars. Particularly, Cameron was asked about The Force Awakens. His discussion on the subject lasted for less than a minute. But his response has left a large impact.

Apparently, Cameron said he used to be a fan of the franchise, back when his old friend George Lucas was directing the movies. He praised the original six but then said he found J.J. Abram’s recent work a bit lacking. “I don’t want to say too much about the film, and I also have a lot of respect for J.J. Abrams,” Cameron said. “And I also want to see where they’re taking it next, you know, see what they’re doing with it. I have to say that George’s group of six films had more innovative visual imagination, and [The Force Awakens] was more of a retrenchment to things you had seen before and characters you had seen before.”

Check out the short clip from the interview below.

Cameron’s opinion seems to be based out of a lot of respect for the earlier films, especially since he said later in the interview that he was inspired to get into the industry by the visual effects work he saw in the movies. He did reiterate that he wants to see where the new films for Star Wars will take the story next – but his current verdict is a harsh sentence for The Force Awakens.

What do you think? Do you agree with Cameron’s opinion? Let us know in the comments!
