Godzilla is returning home after being in America as the original studio, Toho, is back to give us the Kaiju king on the big screen with the official trailer of Godzilla Minus One (seen below). With a new director, Takashi Yamazaki comes to helm the film while also being the visual effects supervisor and sole writer. The footage shows destruction and drama as we are about to get a modern yet vintage taste of the king of the monsters.
The last Japanese Godzilla film was Shin Godzilla in 2016. This is not related as Toho goes back to the roots of its monster by delivering individual stories from different filmmakers having their own take. The 2016 film was a contemporary, political examination of how the Japanese government would respond to such a creature. The film’s origins came from a metaphor for the atomic bombs dropped on Japan in World War 2. The Godzilla Minus One trailer returns to that metaphor as we see its destructive nature rampaging through Tokyo.
Godzilla Minus One Trailer Brings Back the Kaiju King
As seen in the trailer, we see the impact of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as the country grapples with its trauma. To make things worse, Godzilla comes to stomp, chew, and a whole lot worse during a rampage through the country. As written in the film’s description that perfectly captures this situation, Japan “is at its low point at zero, and [Godzilla] knocks the country down one to the negatives.”
In recent years, the Monsterverse in America has been rampaging forward between two Godzilla films, Kong: Skull Island, and their crossover movie. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is set for theaters next year to continue the current story. An expansion of the world will come to Apple TV with the series Monarch: Legacy of the Monsters. The series will also be released in 2024.
Thankfully, after getting the trailer for Godzilla Minus One, we won’t have long to wait until it is released in theaters. In Japan, it will be released on November 3, the 69th anniversary of the original 1954 movie. North America will get the new film on December 1.
