One of the best things in Starfield is the freedom of choice and variety of it. That freedom can be seen in building your ship, customizing your weapon, or choosing a companion for yourself. In the game, you will meet several characters that can be recruited, but you have to do a series of certain things to be able to invite them to your ship. In this guide, you can learn how to recruit Mathis Castillo from the Crimson Fleet in Starfield.

As you progress through Starfield, completing main and side quests, you will encounter several characters that can be recruited. One of them is Mathis Castillo whom you will meet during the Echoes of the Past mission. If you choose the correct options as you go on, Mathis will help you in the future and eventually join your crew. Let’s dive into what choices you have to make in order to recruit this pirate.

Praising Mathis’ Help before Delago

The very first time you can choose to back up Mathis is at the end of Echoes of the Past, the quest you first meet him. At the end, Delago will ask you how things have gone and there you have several options and one of them is “Thanks to Mathis’ help, we found some information about Kryx’s Legacy.”

Choosing this dialogue will be the start of your friendship with Mathis. In the end, Delago says that Mathis should join the Crimson Fleet, and Mathis will thank you when you see him again in the Nova.

Siding With Crimson Fleet

The Crimson Fleet questline is one of the biggest and most important ones in Starfield. In the end, you have to choose whether you side with the Crimson Fleet or the UC SysDef. This is an important decision and siding with each of them means you have to face the other. Now if you want to recruit Mathis in the future, you have to side with the Crimson Fleet here. Eventually, you will meet Mathis during this mission who will thank you once again.

Once you’ve completed the last mission of Crimson Fleet questline and saved The Key speak with Mathis once again. He can be found in the Crimson Fleet command deck where you would usually meet Delago. Speak with him and you will be given the chance to recruit Mathis. Select that line of dialogue and he will join your crew and help you in your adventures.
