The Walking Dead: Betrayal is nearly here, and to celebrate its early access launch, Other Ocean Interactive has decided to give players a free weekend of gameplay. The free weekend event will give prospective TWD: Betrayal players four days to team up, explore the game, and wreak havoc before deciding if they want to play the game for real. Interested players will be able to opt-in on Steam, where The Walking Dead: Betrayal is currently available for purchase during its early-access period. The game’s official release date is currently scheduled for some time next year.

The Walking Dead: Betrayal Is Free For Four Days

First announced last month, The Walking Dead: Betrayal is a social deception game where teams of players must cooperate to survive the zombie apocalypse. The game, set in AMC’s The Walking Dead universe, will let teams of up to eight players craft and scavenge for materials in an attempt to escape an area before the zombie hordes get to them. However, not everything is as it seems: at least one player on the team is a Traitor whose job it is to either lay low and quietly sabotage the players’ efforts or feed them to the hordes outright.

After The Walking Dead: Betrayal was announced, it wasn’t hard to notice that the game bears some similarities to Among Us. Given that Among Us is one of the most popular social deception games ever and could be credited with bringing the genre into the public eye, that’s likely on purpose. The game’s developers, Other Ocean Interactive, aren’t strangers to social deception games, either: their last game, Project Winter, sees a team of eight players struggling to survive in a wintry wilderness while a few Traitors are tasked with secretly sabotaging their efforts.

As part of TWD: Betrayal‘s free weekend, players will have from today until September 18th to download the game on Steam and join a game. Once the four days of free gameplay are over, players will have to pay $19.99 to keep playing the game. In addition, if players choose to pay for the game during its early access period, they will be rewarded with a Rick Grimes skin to customize their avatar with. It may be possible to unlock the skin later on in the game, but it’s a guaranteed reward for the next four days.

The Walking Dead: Betrayal is currently available in early access on Steam.
