Who replaces Daniel Craig as James Bond is a constant topic on the internet but he’s not gone yet. Craig is the star of four 007 movies so far but the question of number five is on everyone’s mind. He’s already on record as saying that another Bond movie doesn’t hugely interest him. His signing on with twenty part television drama Purity made his stepping down seem even more likely.
However, Tom Hiddleston and the other front runners aren’t in the clear just yet. Showtime CEO has confirmed what Craig’s publicists have been insisting. Namely, that Purity’s filming schedule doesn’t rule out a return to the tuxedo.
The comments come from a moment during the Television Critics Association where according to the Independent he said;
“It depends when they do the next James Bond movie, but I don’t think it precludes him is the answer.”
“[Purity] will largely be completed during the course of 2017, depending how long they’re willing to wait and shoot the next Bond. There might be some breaks somewhere, but [production] will be fairly continuous.”
Daniel Craig’s eleven years as Bond revitalised the franchise after the rather campy Die Another Day. Craig’s appointment met a lot of hostility online at first. The main complaint being that he didn’t match the traditional description of Bond. His stunning performance in Casino Royale silenced the haters and redefined the character. Craig’s portrayal is among the most iconic since Sean Connery himself. The actor from Primrose redefined 007 as a broken man searching for purpose.
However, Craig’s personal lack of enthusiasm for the role may make his availability moot. Daniel Craig’s potential successors will face the challenge of making the role their own. Craig’s legacy may make this a bit of an uphill struggle.
