MDHR is titling this upcoming event the “Xbox Anniversary Update”. Sadly, it doesn’t add any new gameplay content, but there is still plenty to be excited for! The update will instead include the following:

  • 100 hi-res photos taken from the MDHR archives that reveal unseen concept art and art pieces.
  • The entire Cuphead soundtrack, updated to include songs from the ‘Delicious Last Course‘ DLC. MDHR has also incorporated unused music tracks and orchestral demos!
  • A behind-the-scenes video player to provide some insight into the making of Cuphead.

These exciting insights to the world of game development will certainly be fascinating to see for ourselves. Especially with a game like Cuphead, where art and sound direction are anything but conventional! In an interview with Xbox Wire, MDHR Co-Director Moldenhauer elaborated on the importance of sharing their development process with the fans.

Original sketches, concept art, process footage of painting or model work, unused music tracks, orchestra session footage, you name it. Knowing that we wanted to give our thanks to the Xbox community that has shown us love from day 1, we really thought about the kinds of things we would want to see as fans of Cuphead. The goal was to make this update feel like a real peek behind the scenes at what went into bringing the game to life, across all parts of development!

As for why the team at MDHR decided not to provide the Cuphead anniversary update to PS5 and Switch users, Co-Director Chad Moldenhauer said this:

We thought it would be fun to give this to our Xbox community as a gift on the game’s anniversary, as our Cuphead journey really started with the release on Xbox.

It really seems like Moldenhauer and the team at MDHR are truly appreciative of the Xbox community. This makes sense, given that Cuphead was announced way back in 2013 alongside ID@Xbox. It really makes you wonder whether or not Cuphead would have ever succeeded the way it has if it weren’t for Microsoft’s support.

The Cuphead anniversary update launches on September 29th and is available to all owners of the game on Xbox and PC.
