As the release date approaches, Super Mario Bros Wonder has been slowly revealing more information on the upcoming platform title. For the first time in many years, Mario returns with a completely new style compared to the older New Super Mario Bros style. With new graphics, music, and gameplay, Super Mario Bros Wonder represents a fresh change to 2D Mario games that the series desperately needs at this point. For better or worse, many changes are coming to the series, including some to the series’ infamous co-op. Recently, fans have been relatively up in arms over one change to Super Mario Bros Wonder co-op features that may diminish the experience of the game overall.

In New Super Mario Bros Wii, for the first time, multiple players could play the same level at the same time. Looking back at the start of simultaneous co-op Mario games, one feature has always stood out. When playing together, characters can collide, bounce off each other, and throw their friends around. The limited real estate of each level creates a hectic and chaotic experience. Now, Super Mario Bros Wonder has revealed that co-op will no longer feature collisions between co-op players. This means that players will now harmlessly pass through each other, removing one of the best co-op features Mario has ever had.

Although some may enjoy the change, for the most part, many players feel that this change is for the worse. Personally, one of the most fun parts of New Super Mario Bros is messing with your friends while desperately trying to complete the level. Moments like picking up your friends and hurling them into a nearby pit will always be hilarious. Plus, it makes an additional challenge that 2D Mario games generally need.

With that being said, although this is a strong part of the previous iterations of Mario, the series still seems like it will be a solid 2D Mario game. With new mechanics, like the Wonder Flower, the platformer will create plenty of chaotic content to make up for the lack of collision in Super Mario Bros Wonder co-op. Plus, Super Mario Bros Wonder is adding a massive amount of new features to co-op, including online play as well as a huge roster of characters. In the end, although it’s too early to tell how this will affect the game, it’ll be a bit sad to see the departure of the wonderful and chaotic co-op of 2D Mario.
