Notoriety in Assassin’s Creed Mirage affects the efforts that the city guard will take to defeat you. If you aren’t paying attention to your current notoriety status, your battles quickly become more challenging. Assassin’s Creed Mirage’s notoriety system isn’t difficult to grasp, but removing notoriety is a difficult task. Knowing what causes a notoriety increase as well as steps to reduce it are vital to avoid making situations worse. Here are the inner workings of Assassin’s Creed Mirage’s notoriety system.

How to Gain Notoriety in Assassin’s Creed Mirage

You earn notoriety in Assassin’s Creed Mirage when you commit crimes in full view of the guards. This doesn’t apply to the guard who is being targeted, but other guards who might be watching you. For example, if you assassinate a guard, your notoriety doesn’t go up. But if another guard witnesses you are assassinating another guard, you get one level of notoriety. This isn’t limited to assassination; failed pickpocketing or getting caught opening large chests will increase your notoriety.

Making a high-profile assassination will also increase your notoriety by one stage. This forces you to flee from the guards and it won’t be dispelled immediately. If you continue to fight the guards who apprehend you, your notoriety will increase as well.

There are three levels of notoriety. The first level means that guards will be on the lookout for Basim. Staying around them too long will make them suspicious and they will eventually apprehend you. Even if you have the proper skills and weapons, provoking too many battles against the guards inconveniences you often.

When you reach the second level, you start seeing archers among the guards who attempt to apprehend you. The final level of notoriety results in dual-wielding guards who are difficult combatants. Without a good amount of Elixirs and combat practice, these guards will take you down often.

All levels of notoriety will draw the attention of civilians and guards. But the more notoriety you have, the more likely civilians will call out for guards, forcing you to flee. It’s not a problem most of the time but it does slow down the pace of the game.

Reducing your notoriety is possible but it won’t go away naturally. The first option is to find a Munadi who is the equivalent of the town speaker. Give them a Power Token earned from the Contract Board or pickpocketing and they will clear your entire notoriety meter. It’s not easy to obtain Power Tokens but this gets the guards and civilians off your back quickly.

If you are in a pinch and must lose some guards, you can sit on benches or dive into haystacks. You can also spend Scholar Tokens on groups of scholars and hide between them. None of these options will actually reduce notoriety, but they can give you a hiding place until it’s safe to do so. These methods also won’t work while guards are chasing you; you must be out of sight before any of these options are available.

Reducing Notoriety with Wanted Posters

The other method is to tear down wanted posters of Basim throughout the city. You must search different city areas to find them; they are not immediately available after getting your first notoriety level. Once you find them, tearing down a poster reduces your notoriety level by one. It’s a slow process but it allows you to conserve your valuable tokens.

Failing to understand the notoriety system isn’t the end of the world, but it makes your game harder. Once you learn what triggers notoriety and how to bring it back down, it’s easy to get yourself out of dangerous situations. Keep an eye on the meter at all times and be prepared to search the city for a way to lower it.
