Marvel Is Restarting Daredevil: Born Again After Firing Writers and Directors

From court room procedural to more violence.

When there is trouble, sometimes the reset button is needed. Daredevil: Born Again has lost its writers and directors as Marvel tries to find the footing for the Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio series. After executives reviewed footage from before the show shut down due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, leaders like Kevin Feige realized it was not working.

Daredevil: Born Again Rebooted Again as Marvel Searches for New Writers and Directors

The troubling news comes from a major report from The Hollywood Reporter about the state of TV at Marvel. The shakeup started in September when the studio quietly parted ways with lead writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman, who are staying as executive producers. Their initial vision was closer to She-Hulk in the sense that it was a procedural rather than a narrative-focused series. It was not at all what fans loved about the Netflix series, which had brutal violence and compelling drama. If this original legal procedural concept had stayed, then we wouldn’t have seen Matt Murdock in costume until episode four.

Daredevil: Born Again was greenlit and announced to be 18 episodes, but in the report, it is said to be two seasons now as Marvel pivots to a less limited series and more serialized TV. The shift will also keep some legal aspects filmed, but the more procedural elements will be cut.

TV for the studio has been difficult, with few successes and more misses for fans and critics. While many shows have been a place to introduce new characters, like She-Hulk, Daredevil: Born Again is a new slate for a beloved character from a run on Netflix, so Marvel has pressure to nail the series. Due to its troubled production and restart, it is likely but unconfirmed to be pushed out of 2024.
