It turns out that Game Pass does not block games from reaching people willing to spend money. Starfield was the best-selling game of September. It surpassed games released earlier this year and the recently released Mortal Kombat 1. MK was on more platforms and released on September 14, while Bethesda’s RPG came out on September 6.

Starfield Fatalities Mortal Kombat 1 as the Best-Selling Game of September

The list comes from Circana (formerly NPD Group), which delivered the top games of September and of the year. Starfield landed as number one on the former and seventh on the latter. Below is the list of the best-selling games of September:

  • Starfield
  • Mortal Kombat 1
  • EA Sports FC 24
  • Madden NFL 24
  • Payday 3
  • NBA 2K24
  • The Crew: Motorfest
  • Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon
  • Hogwarts Legacy
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022)

New releases like Starfield and Mortal Kombat 1 shifted the placements of other games for the best-selling game of September. NFL 24 was previously the top performer in August before getting bumped to the fourth spot. Other placements in August were Armored Core (2), Hogwarts Legacy (5), and Call of Duty (4).

The year as a whole, as of writing, looks quite different from this list. While NetherRealm’s latest installment of its brutal franchise and Bethesda’s NASApunk RPG are neck and neck, it differs greatly from how September shaped up. Despite controversies, Hogwarts Legacy is the best-selling game of 2023 so far. You can see the breakdown below:

  • Hogwarts Legacy
  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
  • Madden NFL 24
  • Diablo IV
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022)
  • Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
  • Starfield
  • Mortal Kombat 1
  • Resident Evil 4
  • MLB: The Show 23

We have three more months of the year, so it should be interesting to see the longevity of these games. While Starfield won out September, so far in the year, it did not reach Hogwarts or Tears of the Kingdom. This week, we have Spider-Man 2, which will clearly sell like webby hotcakes. Next week, on October 27, will be Alan Wake 2, another game that will likely sell millions of copies.
