This article is over 8 years old and may contain outdated information.

A Series of Unfortunate Events is soon coming to Netflix, and the popular streaming service finally released a trailer for their new show today. Development of the project was first announced in November 2014, and since then we have seen many photos behind the scenes of the Baudelaire children, as well as stills of Neil Patrick Harris as the famous Count Olaf– all of which have only gotten us more anxious for the release. In just the short amount of time the trailer has circulated today, it has been met with excitement from long-time fans of the series; and though the footage was short, it was exactly what we all have been waiting to see.

A Series of Unfortunate Events
The Baudelaire children have to use their wits to escape Count Olaf.

A Series of Unfortunate Events is originally a thirteen-book series, written by Lemony Snicket (Daniel Handler), and the first book reveals the Baudelaire children, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny, have lost their parents in a terrible fire. Each subsequent book details the rather unfortunate events of the children’s lives, as they are passed around from distant relatives while trying to avoid the villainous Count Olaf. The book series was adapted into a film with Jim Carrey as Count Olaf in 2004. Instead of flushing out the story, however, the events of the first three novels were compressed into that single film- a decision that did not go over well with those who read the books.

The upcoming Netflix adaptation not only gives fans hope, but it also gives this beloved series the attention it has been deserving of all along. In the trailer, Patrick Warburton as Lemony Snicket speaks in a grim tone, until he is interrupted by Count Olaf, who seems to be rehearsing for his play, The Marvelous Marriage.

A Series of Unfortunate Events
Lemony Snicket warns us of the terrible journey ahead.

The trailer ends with Snicket warning us against watching the show. This, of course, is reminiscent of the dire tone that is present throughout the novels, as the reader is constantly discouraged from continuing on with the story and the horrible tragedies that await the Baudelaire children.

All of the unpleasantries begin when A Series of Unfortunate Events premieres on Friday, January 13, 2017. Stay tuned to The Nerd Stash for more news.
