Miss America‘s solo title, simply, ‘America’, has been a long time coming and that says a lot. While the last few years show that more diverse characters bring in new fans, old habits die hard. Since the explosive success of the new Miss Marvel and Spider-Gwen fans have wanted this. America Chavez has a lot of fans and they’ve finally got what they want.
America Chavez was born in another dimension that her mothers saved at the cost of their lives. Chavez left this dimension shortly after this. Wanting to be a hero yet that dimension was too peaceful to need one. Chavez first caught fan’s attention during 2013’s Young Avengers run and her solo series is big news for another reason.
Miss America’s solo series is Marvel’s first title to star an LGBT character. DC already have Midnighter and Appollo and Batwoman fronting series so this is a big step forward for Marvel. On the subject of creative teams and release dates, io9 gives us the following.
“Announced at New York Comic-Con, there’s no details yet on America, other than a cover for the first issue drawn by artist Jamie McKelvie, who, alongside Kieron Gillen, helped propel America to popularity in the 2013 Young Avengers series. No other pieces of the creative team were revealed, and neither was a release date.”
There’s no official word on why Marvel chose now to give Miss America her due. It probably has something to do with Chavez’s creator’s new Image comics title. ‘All-America Comix’ will star a very similar character called America Vasquez. This might be the result of Chavez’s creators being sick of waiting for her to get her own title.
